The Security Assessment in North Africa (SANA) is a multi-year project of the Small Arms Survey to support those engaged in building a more secure environment in North Africa and the Sahel-Sahara region. The project goal is to contribute to a more secure environment in North Africa by enhancing knowledge on small arms trafficking, armed violence, armed actors and related measures and programmes among the relevant policy-makers, researchers, and organizations.

Objectifs du projet
(Anglais)

The SANA project's Phase 2 will aim at three main strategie objectives in particular.

1. The pool of available and reliable information, data and analysis on small arms, armed actors, armed violence and related measures and programmes in North Africa is progressively expanded and deepened (research and publications).

2. Target audiences access, use, and integrate SANA reports into their work and understanding of issues (outreaeh and training).

3. The measurement, monitoring, and evaluation of the effectiveness of security promotion initiatives in the region are enhanced (operational M&E support).

The main outputs of this second phase will include:

• The publication of 6 in-depth studies (Working Paper or Issue Brief format) based on extensive field research in the region. Topics for research will be selected based on the needs expressed by stakeholders as well as operational feasibility. Current priorities include illicit flows of weapons in Northern Niger, continued monitoring of alliances between armed actors in Libya, armed violence in the regional triangle between Mali, Niger and Libya, and regional cooperation initiatives on border management in North Africa and the Sahel.

• The publication as online 'Dispatehes' of 15 shorter, timely pieces of analysis on SANA's core themes, drawing from its now established network of regional experts.

• Regular outreaeh activities based on a multi-layered strategy, including restricted informal briefings to update stakeholders on the results of ongoing research, report launches and conference presentations, and maintenance of the SANA website as the one-stop shop for all project-related information and Outputs.

• The piloting of an innovative partnership with an operational actor implementing community safety projects in the region. SANA will assist the operational Organization by building a methodology and model for the monitoring and evaluation of a project's entire life cycle, in order to generate evidence of project impact, success or failure.
