The aims of the project are:
1. To validate the use of the ‘optical flow’ method of assessing poultry welfare in a wide variety of
European broiler farms and conditions.
2. To validate the method by comparing it to more labour intensive direct observation methods used at
flock level.
3. To validate the method by comparing it to the behaviour and physical health of individual birds.
4. To relate optical flow, behaviour and welfare to levels of infection.
5. To develop a database for data collected across European farms that links optical flow to other
measures already used by producers for flock management, with the goal of providing a comprehensive
flock management tool.
