Abstract

We propose to investigate pump-turbine instabilities in particular to predict and detect the onset of instabilities, to understand their development, and to suppress them. Main focus is to understand the physical phenomena that are intrinsic to pump-turbine instabilities near synchronisation and during part-load pump-mode operation. Findings of this of study will not only enhance the operating range of pump-turbines beyond the current stability limits, but also allow establishment of new design guidelines for stable pump-turbines.
