Four test fields with two pavement structures (traffic class T3) will be tested with and without RAP on the ASTRA test site in Lenzburg.
Pavement structure 1: a surface layer AC 11 S (35 mm) on a base course AC T 16 (45 mm)
Pavement structure 2: a single base course AC T 22 S (80 mm)
The RAP content will be 60% for the surface layer and 80% for the base layer AC 22 T S, identical to the lab mixes of the project EP1 (AC T 16 is always without RAP).
In the initial phase of the project, a mixing plant capable to produce the defined hot mixes with high RAP content, will be evaluated. Afterwards, laboratory tests will be carried by out by LAVOC applying the mix design methods developed in the single project EP5 (VSS 2005/456) to investigate the base materials and to design the asphalt mixes with RAP. In the second step, the four test fields will be constructed according to the recipes defined by LAVOC. Cores will be taken to examine whether the volumetric properties of the pavements with and without RAP are comparable. To evaluate the pavement response and durability, several sensors will be installed and measurements (falling weight deflectometer, rutting depth) will be carried out on regular basis before, during and after the testing with the mobile traffic load simulator MLS10. The results obtained from the field tests will be analysed and compared with the laboratory findings. Furthermore, the lifetime determined from lab experiments will be compared to the outcome of the MLS10 tests.
