A novel thermometer drill will be developed for temperature monitoring at the drill/bone interface during dental implant preparation, thus avoiding bone necrosis and subsequent implant failure due to overheating. A fibre Bragg grating integrated into the dental drill will be used as sensor and connected to the remote measurement unit via a contactless light coupling in the handset. With about 1.4 mio drills and 30'000 handsets, the potential annual market is CHF 13 mio.
