Our goal is to create a mirror-image synthetic biology, independent of nature. Starting from L-nucleotides and|D-amino acids, we will use chemical synthesis to establish a functioning mirror-image biological system from|artificial components. There are immediate practical outcomes: D-DARPins will not be substrates of natural proteases, permitting oral application, and they may fundamentally overcome immunogenicity, the most|principal limitation of therapeutic proteins.
