The project will seek to conduct a stratégie assessment of current trafficking trends in the Sahel. It will seek to situate Mali within the context of the broader région, examining the economic, political, ideological, and social drivers of cross border crime, violent extremism and other transnational security challenges in the current context, It will also provide usefui information of changes in the trends of illicit trafficking and thus act as an indicator for foreseeing future developments to which peacebuilding programs may have to adapt. In providing in-depth data on the impact of trafficking on emerging political developments in the région and the key gaps a regional approach would need to address, the project will be a crucial input to ongoing policy processes and thus for more sustainable strategies to build long-term peace. In creating a network of local actors which should continue the debate after the termination of this project, it also acts as a kick-off for a long-term comprehensive exchange in region. This will ultimately help the local stakeholders to be better prepared to address the issue in a regional approach. The project also aims at illustrating the link between organized crime and peacebuilding efforts on a specific example. This will serve as important input for a better understanding of the role of organized crime for peacebuilding efforts in general.
