Diesel engine designs required to meet ever more demanding operational requirements, to give reduced emissions, high performance and added commercial advantage, rely on: selection of the best materials in terms of manufacturability, mechanical integrity and cost, and the adoption of effective mechanical analysis. This project aims to exploit the advantage provided by the adoption of vermicular iron for the cylinder head material and a design based on engineering data involving superimposed thermo-mechanical and high cycle fatigue loading.
