COST-Action MP1206 - Electrospun Nano-fibres for bio inspired composite materials and innovative industrial applications

The aim of this project will be the synthesis of lead-free fibres with different fibre diameters by the electrospinning process and the fabrication of ferroelectric sensor composites. Our expertise at Empa on the synthesis of lead-free powders, the electrospinning processing of inorganic fibres and hybrid material fabrication will be combined and utilised to maximise the outcome of this project. The lead-free fibres will be dispersed within a piezoelectric polymeric matrix to produce a polymer-ceramic hybrid composite, with the polarisation behaviour of the resultant material investigated. The higher piezoelectric charge and dielectric constants when compared to pure piezoelectric polymer materials and the higher flexibility when compared to ferroelectric ceramics attained by the use of this hybrid material will be a great technological advance that would be available to European industry. The scientific questions to be investigated will be the tailoring of the various syntheses and processing steps to produce the optimal material. The deliverable aspect of this project will be sensors with a diameter of around 20 mm which can be attached to different surfaces to detect impacts and deformations.
