Transatlantic Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA), Trade, Trade Barriers
Description succincte
(Anglais)

A transatlantic free trade agreement (TAFTA) between the EU and the US should foster economic growth, jobs and competitiveness on both sides of the Atlantic. For such an agreement different barriers to trade would have to be removed. In this regard, tariff rates are not the biggest obstacle. Non-tariff trade barriers (NTBs) and differences in internal market access (services, construction, public procurement, foreign direct investments and so on) constitute far larger barriers.

Switzerland which is not party to TAFTA will be affected by trade diversion. However, the country could also benefit in terms of growth from the stimulation in transatlantic trade.

The purpose of the study is to obtain a CGE based analysis of the economic impact on Switzerland of TAFTA, TAFTA plus (EU, US, EFTA, Canada, Mexico, and Turkey) or TAFTAplus/TPP. In addition, a flanking analysis with a partial equilibrium model will examine the effects in more detail for processed agricultural foods.

Objectifs du projet
(Anglais)

The study to be accomplished by the Agent will focus on the impact of TAFTA, TAFTA plus and TAFTAplus/TPP on the Swiss economy as a whole. The CGE assessment includes production, trade, and employment effects, as well as overall macroeconomic effects under both a modest and ambitious liberalization scenario. The study further explains, why the results differ from the ones e.g. in the Ifo study by Felbermayr et al. on the same topic.

The final study will be published in SECO’s publication series «Strukturberichterstattung».
