Abstract (Deutsch)

We plan to use memantine for targeting NMDA receptors in red blood cells of patients with sickle cell disease in vivo. We envison reduction of hemolysis and in the vasooclusive crises. The answer we seek is whether memantine is well-tolerated by sickle cell disease patients. We aim to set ground for a bigger trial and market the compound for new hematological applications and to use NMDA receptors in red blood cells as a pharmacological target.
