Atria are popular both for new buildings and for retrofits. They can decrease office artificial lighting as daylight can enter the office from the atria. They also allow contact to the outside which has a beneficial psychological effect. This design guide shows how the right selection of atrium parameters, such as skylight area, atrium reflectance and window glazing, can decrease the office energy demands. Energy trends as a function of the atrium parameters are obtained. The guidelines are based on 60 dynamic computer simulations of the adjacent office energy requirements. The design guide is to be used at the very start of a project in order to use daylight efficiently in the adjacent offices. It does not claim to be sufficient for detailed planning. As the project proceeds, detailed simulations should be performed.
