Short description
Short description

Our team will collect and record data on the Siberian Ibex trade, including volume and system. A preliminary data collection and comparative analysis will be produced on the basis of information obtained through official government sources and relevant conservation projects. Officials sources will include trade data from the Customs Office of Mongolia, relevant enforcement records from the Mongolian State Border Defence Agency, the State Specialised Inspection Agency, reports on legal hunting quotas issued by the Ministry of Environment and Green Development, Provincial and District Governors’ offices, the Mongolian Hunters’ Association, and historical records for trade volumes from the Mongolian Academy of Sciences.

Mongolia has 3 big markets selling large volumes of raw materials from animals, including wildlife and wild stock. These trade centres are located in or near Ulaanbaatar City. They include the Tsaiz market (in Ulaanbaatar), Emeelt market (45 km west), and Nalaikh (45 km east). The markets are also open to foreign exporters, which are mainly Chinese buyers.

Each of the 21 provinces has a raw material market. Each of these markets represents a major collecting point from which products travel directly to the border markets with China or Russia, or transfer to the markets in Ulaanbaatar. Each soum (rural districts under provinces) has a wide opportunity for wild and domestic animals’ raw material (2, 3, or even more individuals who directly buy from local herders and hunters).

Our team will investigate in 3 main markets for animal raw materials, which are located in Ulaanbaatar and Tov Provinces. Other surveys will be conducted in the markets of main Siberian Ibex distribution areas, which are in Bayan Olgii, Hovd, and Govi-Altai Provinces. In these locations, we will conduct observational surveys and some interviews to shop owners, local hunters, and traders. With the result of interviews, we expect to obtain the types of products sold (horns, fur, or meat), sales transaction, market prices, and quantities sold over time. The same interview method will be used to obtain more information on the Ibex trade from clothing stores and cashmere factories in Mongolia.
