Precision glass molding for the manufacturing of small-scale optical components suffers from the problem of low tool lifetimes and premature degradation of the tool surface, resulting in insufficient surface finishing of pressed lenses and high tooling costs. In the present project these problems will be solved by assessing the failure mechanisms in today's solutions and by developing new coatings that will both enhance the lifetime of the tool by hard and wear-resistant coatings and improve the surface finish by compliant and conformal coating. This innovation will allow a reduction of the process costs at constant superior quality, thereby enabling the industry partner to widen its market share.
