In January 2012, the Small Amis Sun/ey initiated a three year research project on small arnns and insecurity in Libya, North Africa, and the broader Middle East. The project's objective is to provide evidence-based and reliable analysis on critical aspects of the prolifération of small amns, insecurity, and armed violence in the région. It envisions tiie publication of three to four in depth studies per year on topics of particular relevance to policy-makers and practitioners, the création of a dedicated website, the generating and updating of online content, and coordinated outreach efforts.

Objectifs du projet

The goal of the project is to produce fact-based research and analysis on the policy-relevant thèmes of weapons and armed groups prolifération and to help various actors, ranging from the général public to decision-makers, understand the nuanced dynamics and nature of armed groups and move away from stereotypes relayed by the mass media. Furthermore, the results of the research will support decisionand policy-makers, NGOs and other practitioners in designing improved policies and programmes to tackle small arms and armed groups based on robust information and analysis on the types and, where possible, quantities of groups, weapons and ammunition concerned.
