This project carried out by Oxford Research Group will use a newly fornned international network of casualty recording practitioners to generate three products
1) A systematic compilation of existing practice worldwide serving as a resource for practitioners and researchers,
2) A set of analyses of thematic issues related to this practice for specialists in conflict;
3) An accessible summary report written for a wider audience, including policymakers, researchers, and civil society, outlining emerging good practice in this area, and drawing broader implications from the project's findings. The mam impact will be the spread of good practice among existing and new casualty recording initiatives These outcomes fit well into two key subject areas of PD IV, i.e. Dealing with the Past and the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development.

Project aims (English)

The proposed two year project, due to start on 1. July 2010, aims at tackling and putting these longstanding problems to an end through the establishment of an international network of causality recording (International Practitioner Network), regrouping the isolated and uncoordinated efforts of NGOs as well as researchers and practitioners engaged in this field. This will help them to improve, enhance and further develop their casualty recording practices while at the same time give them the possibility to express their needs and aspirations This will require the research and documentation as well as the codification of existing practices while mainstreaming these findings into the outputs that will serve as building-blocks for a self-supporting process for the development and review of standards and practices in casualty recording. The compiling of this range of information will allow Oxford Research Group (ORG) to consolidate the information on causality recording while making use of existing best practices in this field in a coordinated manner.
The project is one component of ORG'S Recording Casualties in Armed Conflict programme that aims at generating the capacity and will of the international community for the personified public recording of every person killed in violent conflict worldwide The programme contains five projects, each capable of independently producing positive outcomes In this respect, synergies created by the outcomes of the individual projects will benefit the programme as a whole
