Abstract

The main objective of the Cost Action TU0803 is to foster the interdisciplinary knowledge of regeneration strategies in shrinking cities across Europe. This project aims at addressing the questions of shrinkage processes and regeneration strategies in the case of Switzerland. It focuses more specifically on two case studies illustrating the challenges of urban regeneration: a new residential development on a former industrial site in a central location and an urban neighbourhood made up of high-rise buildings. The transverse aspect of the case studies is the concept of governance. The project has addressed the various dimensions of urban regeneration processes and analysed the constellation of actors involved in urban regeneration strategies, the role and power of each actor as well as the objectives they pursue, the population groups and stakeholders that are gaining or loosing with the regeneration projects, and the barriers and obstacles for urban regeneration. Other analyses have focused on the demand-side of regeneration strategies (e.g. residential motivations, representations of density, etc.). On the whole, the research has brought a finer understanding of the mechanisms underlying regeneration strategies. Based on an interdisciplinary approach and on a plurality of methods, this research represents an added-value to the related debates on the international level as well as to the debates going on in Switzerland both in the scientific and political milieus.
