Plasma-Enhanced Surface Coating for Advanced Graphite Negative Electrode Materials
Abstract
(German)
Almost 100% of lithium ion batteries today use a surface-coated graphite as the active negative electrode|material. Current manufacturing techniques involve toxic and carcinogenic materials that may be outlawed in|the near future. In this CTI project, the TIMCAL Group and ETH Zurich will develop a cost competitive and|environmentally friendly alternative coating method based on plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition|(PECVD). This coating will be optimized to improve the energy density, durability, and safety of the lithium|ion cell with for applications ranging from energy storage for smart-grid and renewable energy peak|buffering to electric and hybrid electric vehicles.
