The objectives of this project are to develop through genetic identification and parentage DNA testing a DNA forensic framework to determine illegal trade and traffic of wild animals in CITES-listed psittacines, by:
(i) developing a suitable panel of microsatellite markers for a selected list of critically endangered parrot species which are known to be internationally involved in illegal traffic;
(ii) compiling for all these species a population DNA databases for probabilistic assignment, after extensive worldwide sampling of material (e.g. feathers);
(iii) finally, provide to law enforcement agencies the above-mentioned approach to verify whether a claim of captive breeding is true, impeding the attempts to legitimize wild birds into the legal captive bred market.
