On 9 July 2011, the Republic of South Sudan (ROSS) became a sovereign state based on a new transitional constitution which includes a road map for a constitution making process for a "permanent constitution", which soon shall start. All past and present conflicts in Sudan are either based on unequal power and resource sharing or on lack of inclusivity and rights of minorities and the present transitional constitution does not yet take all these points into consideration. Consequently and in order to assure sustainable peace in South Sudan, a well designed constitution making process is decisive. In May 2011, President Salva Kiir asked Switzerland to analyze the transitional constitution (once ratified by the parliament) and to propose ways of how the above mentioned roadmap could be implemented. The study will be realized by the Center for Democratic Studies in Aarau.
