'Green' and Efficient Flame-retardant Composites for Application in Aircraft (GEFCAA)
Abstract
(German)
The interior of passenger/ business aircrafts is made up of wood-based composites both structurally and in its manufactured furniture components. Because of strict aviation authorities‟ regulations, these composites have to be manufactured with flame retardants. Currently-used flame retardants (TCPP, TDCP or TCEP) used for coatings on wood composites are either already banned or will be banned in the near future due to toxicity and environmental reasons. Furthermore being non-reactive, these flame retardants tend to leach out from the composites under hot conditions, which could reduce their efficacy over time. Thus the goal of this project is to develop more effective, environmentally friendly, non-toxic and reactive flame retardants that can be permanently incorporated into the coatings for composites.
