A complete lightweight high speed solution for industrial cutting of wood is proposed. This can only be done with significantly lighter cutting tips than those today (WC, p =15-16 g/cm3). Using a lightweight ceramic matrix composite (CMC) cutting tip (p =4-6 g/cm3) allows a light weight tooling system to be used which allows the cutting speeds to be doubled. Such a silicon nitride/ silicon carbide CMC was shown to be an alternative to WC but was found to be commercially too expensive (CTI project CerWoodCut). An alumina-zirconia matrix CMC which can be reinforced with hard, wear resistant particles will be developed as part of lightweight tool system.
