Im BVET-Projekt 1.10.05 haben wir in Seren mehrerer Küken Antikörper detektiert, die in Immunoblots mit dem Campylobacter jejuni N-Glykan reagierten. Die Titer dieser Antikörper verringerten sich mit der Zeit, woraus wir folgerten, dass es sich um maternale Antikörper handelt. Hohe Titer maternaler Antikörper werden mit einer verspäteten Besiedelung des Kükendarms durch Campylobacter in Verbindung gebracht, woraus auf eine protektive Wirkung dieser Antikörper geschlossen wird. Als mögliche Impfstrategie gegen C. jejuni schlagen wir die Erhöhung dieser maternaler Antikörper durch eine Impfung der Mastelterntiere und eine anschliessende Impfung der Mastküken vor.

Short description (English)

In our analysis of sera of several chicks during BVET-project #1.10.05 we detected antibodies that reacted in immunoblots with the Campylobacter jejuni N-glycan. These antibodies decreased over time and we concluded that these are maternal antibodies. The presence of high titers of maternal antibodies correlates with the delay of colonisation after hatching and suggests a protective mode of action of these antibodies. In a possible vaccination strategy, we envision an increase in the level of maternal antibodies by vaccinating the breeding population, followed by a vaccination of the broilers.

Project aims (English)

As a first step towards a proof-of-concept study we propose to analyse the prevalence of the maternal anti-glycan antibodies in Swiss breeder flocks and correlating these to the Campylobacter status of the flock and, if possible, of the animal. The samples to be tested will come from regular blood and fecal samples from Bell and Micarna broiler breeder flocks to allow a correct statistical analysis. The veterinarians responsible for these breeder flocks have already been contacted and have consented to provide us with the necessary samples.
