Short description (English)

The study written by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) analyses the historical development and the current challenges of the common defense and security policy of the European Union and its consequences for Switzerland.

Project aims (English)

In light of the Presidency Conclusions of the Helsinki European Council of December 1999 to create a capacity to build up its own military capabilities in the field of crisis management, the GCSP together with the Institut européen de l'Université de Genève will pursue the following tasks in executing a research project which will focus on four areas:
- the new institutional structure of the EU
- the legal basis of intervention of the EU military capacity
- the connections with NATO
- the association of non-member countries of the EU and the NATO

Abstract (English)
