European ERA-NET MATERA program JOLIE-Joining of Lightweight Alloys to advanced FGM metal ceramic materials (Version 3 22.10.2010)
Abstract
(Deutsch)
The goal is to make a lightweight multi-layer ceramic/aluminium based automotive brake disc prototype. Two lightweight materials will be joined by newly developed vacuum brazing technology to make a lightweight brake system with only one third the weight of a conventional cast iron brake disc. Because the disc consists only of a thin layer of a cheap abrasive particle reinforced ceramic composite it will be significantly cheaper than the solid ceramic discs brakes used in today's high performance cars. The brazing technology that will be developed has huge potential spin off possibilities in other high technology fields. The project consists of industrial, academic and research partners in three countries with strong automotive and high technology links.
