The development of linear infrastructures on the Swiss Plateau, on surface or underground, is opposed to excavation in rocks with various properties, which are mainly grouped under the term of Molasse of the plateau.

More precise denomination includes terms that are issued from various domains (geology, quarries, stone cutting, civil engineering) like Macigno, Marly Sandstone, argileouse marl, Obere Süsswassermolasse, … completed by a multitude of local names (Grès de la Cornalle, Effingermergel, …

In the domain of construction and geotechnics, in particular, this complicates the characterization of the molassic rock and may conduct to an inappropriate mode of execution, construction time needed and therefore to higher costs of the construction.

This inappropriate evaluation of the molassic rock may lead to the necessity to reinstatement works of inadequately designed constructions within its natural environment.

Re-using and recycling of excavation materials of theses lithologies may then be planned already during the stage of project-design.

Consequently, this project of a molassic rock terminology will be useful to designers and builders of construction works in finding a common language to characterize this type of rock.

Le développement des infrastructures linéaires à ciel ouvert et en souterrain sur le plateau suisse est confronté à l'excavation dans des roches aux propriétés très diverses, mais qui sont toutes regroupées sous le terme de Molasse du plateau.

La dénomination plus précise comporte des termes issus de divers domaines (géologie, exploitation de carrière, tailleurs de pierre, génie civil) telle que Macigno, Marno-Grès, marne argileuse, Obere Süsswassermolasse,,.. complété par une multitude de noms locaux (Grès de la Cornalle, Effingermergel,..).

Dans le domine de la construction et de la géotechnique en particulier, ceci complique la caractérisation de la roche molassique et peut conduire à des choix inappropriés des modes d'exécution, des temps de construction et donc des coûts de construction des ouvrages.

Cette mauvaise appréciation de la roche molassique peut ensuite mener à la nécessité de réfection d'ouvrages mal dimensionnées par rapport au milieu naturel.

La réutilisation et la valorisation des déblais d'excavation de ces lithologies pourront ainsi être planifiés déjà en phase de projet.

Par conséquent, ce projet de terminologie des roches molassiques permettrait aux planificateurs et constructeurs des ouvrages du génie civil de trouver un langage commun pour caractériser ce type de roche.

The aims of this research is :

1. to assemble and to structure the various denomination of the of the rocks of the Swiss Plateau

2. to allocate to the various lithotypes the approrial geomecanical properties

This study will provide :

A uniformity the denomination of the typical rocks of the swiss plateau which will
- diminish the costs of excavations by using adequate engines and tunneling supports
- recycle the excavation material by optimizing their reutilization
- restraining the deterioration of constructions along their existence
- diminish the costs of maintenance

The produce of this study will become a base of a standard for the denomination of the molassic rocks of the Swiss Plateau in relation with the principal geological and geotechnical characteristics.

Le projet de recherche a pour objectif de:

1. rassembler et structurer les diverses dénomination des roches du Plateau molassique suisse;

2. attribuer des caractéristiques géomécaniques propres aux différents lithotypes;

L'étude se propose d'uniformiser la dénomination actuellement éclectique des roches typiques de la molasse suisse
afin de :
- diminuer les coûts d'excavation par un choix judicieux des engins et des soutènements
- valoriser les déblais d'excavation en optimalisant leur réutilisation
- limiter la détérioration dans le temps des ouvrages
- diminuer les coûts de maintenance

Le produit de la recherche servira à l'élaboration d'une norme pour la dénomination des roches molassiques suisses compréhensives des principales caractéristiques géologiques et géomécaniques.
