Abstract
(English)
Erwinia amylovora causes fire blight, the most devastating pome fruit disease (e.g., apple, pear). It is affects forest and amenity Rosaceae (e.g., Crataegus, Sorbus, Cotoneaster), posing an ecological and quality-of-life threat. Erwinia pyrifoliae is a newly described, closely related species with a narrower host-range and limited distribution (e.g., Asian pear, East Asia). We have sequenced the complete genomes of both species in a prior project. Further resequencing of E. amylovora strains and sequencing of other species will be done, time permitting. This massive amount of genomic data provides a unique opportunity to compare these genomes in order to identify genes that may be involved in host-range and differential ecological fitness. This project will specifically compare these genomes with the aim of identifying such differential features. Additionally, we will apply comparative genomics for extracting from the genome data possible evolutionary insights relevant to when and possibly where these related pathogens originated.
