Kurzbeschreibung
(Englisch)
The goal of this project is to prove that open interaction frameworks, conceived as systems of 'artificial institutions' within wich artificial and human agents can flexibly interact, can be used to support human collaboration in real working environments, like for example a virtual enterprise. The project, which spans over a period of two years, will be carried out in strict cooperation by two research units, one at USI, Lugano, and one at HES-SO, Sierre.

Abstract
(Englisch)
The possibility to specify open distributed interaction systems, which can be dynamically entered and left by heterogeneous, autonomous, and self-interested software agents, is widely recognized to be a crucial requirement for the development of distributed applications on the Internet. In our past research we have specified a complete Agent Communication Language (ACL) and developed OCeAN, a meta-model for the specification of artificial institutions that can be used to model open interaction systems where heterogeneous software and human agents may interact. The overall goal of this project, carried out in strict cooperation by two research units (USI, Lugano, and HES-SO, Sierre) is to extend the application independent OCeAN meta-model in order to be able to concretely use it for developing and executing a demonstrative system in the field of e-Energy markets. Given the importance and the advantages of the adoption of the notion of agent environment for the mediation of physical interactions we plan to study how to integrate this concept in our model. In particular we plan to extend the existing notion of environment in order to be able to use it not only for the mediation of physical interactions but also as a means for the mediation of social interactions. From the technological point of view, we plan to formalize such a model for the specification of open interaction systems using declarative languages that will make possible to share in an unambiguous way the specification of interaction systems among human designers and among software agents. The adoption of a formal language makes possible in principle to change the rules of interaction without the need to heavily reprogram the software participants. Our choice regarding the formal languages is to use Semantic Web Technologies, in particular Ontology Web Language (OWL), the Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL), and OWL-API. There are many advantages in using those technologies: they make possible to use existing widely adopted domain ontologies; secondly certain type of reasoning on the state of the interaction system can be performed by using existing efficient reasoners that are freely available and widely used; another important advantage is that Semantic Web technologies are increasingly becoming a standard for Internet applications and thus allow for a high degree of interoperability of data and applications, which is a crucial precondition for the development of open systems. From the architecture point of view we plan to realize the demonstrative system by using and extending the GOLEM environment framework.
