COST-Action IC0803 - RF/Microwave Communication Subsystems for Emerging Wireless Technologies (RFCSET)

The COST Action IC0803 focuses on RF/microwave subsystems related problems. This includes technologies for ultra low power and power efficient RF front-ends, the development of smart and reconfigurable RF radio transceivers and related design, modelling and optimization methods and CAD techniques. This implies enhanced simulation tools with features beyond the currently available software. In agreement with the Action plan, this proposal aims to improve electromagnetic theory related to passive microwave components with special emphasis on power consumption issues by taking into account the true electromagnetic field distribution instead of considering equivalent circuit models. This e.g. allows estimating the individual Q-factor of each resonator in a filter. Such information will help design engineers to decide where low-loss materials have to be used. Be-yond this, synthesis strategies shall be developed where, among other criteria, the power consumption is an optimization goal.

The COST Action IC0803 focuses on RF/microwave subsystems related problems. This includes technologies for ultra low power and power efficient RF front-ends, the development of smart and reconfigurable RF radio transceivers as well as related design, modelling and optimization methods and CAD techniques. This implies enhanced simulation tools with features beyond currently available software. In agreement with the Action plan, this research project aims to improve the electromagnetic modelling and simulation of passive microwave components with special emphasis on power consumption issues and losses. This will help engineers to improve the overall system performance by taking accurately into acccout losses during the design phase of systems. Moreover, future systems that shall meet the requirements of low power consumption demand a better and deeper understanding of the interaction between the different system components. Electromagnetic modelling is an essential part in the design and development of such systems and remains a challenge, especially with respect to the high integration of the components. This asks for hybrid methods and optimized numerical techniques.
