Feasibility Study for Tritium powered betavoltaic cells based on thin-film silicon (BetaSil
Abstract
(Englisch)
Specific applications require very long lifetime and reliable energy sources. Batteries based on radioactive sources may offer advantages compared to classical chemical batteries. Compared to other radioactive sources, the low energy beta particles emitted by tritium alleviate considerably the security issues related to such sources. The combination of tritium with thin film silicon diodes should offer a good compromise in term of performances, power density, low cost fabrication and safety.
