Previous research funding by KTI provided insight for a novel single-use 200-L bioreactor system (OrbShake®200) leading to its marketing by Kühner AG. A prototype 3¿500-L bioreactor (working volume of 2¿500 L) is being designed by Kühner AG with the intention of expanding the ongoing research in large-scale orbital shaking with the ultimate goal of its commercialization. The main issues are the engineering aspects of large-scale shaken reactors and the cell biological constraints on fluid handling, oxygen supply, and carbon dioxide removal.
