Liver DNA damage due to furan treatment of fertilized turkey eggs will be assessed using the alkaline single cell gel
electrophoresis (comet) assay over a range of doses. The experimental design will allow for distinguishing between
DNA interstrand and DNA-protein cross-links as the cause for the reduced DNA migration observed in preliminary
investigations, to determine the time course of the cross-linking effects of furan and to elucidate the ratio of crosslinking
and strand breaks over the tested dose range.
This study is aimed at providing more insight into the mode of action of furan genotoxicity.
