This project is to develop an innovative orthopaedic implant composed of a metal bone screw and a biodegradable drug delivery system to locally administer Bisphosphonates. Implant surfaces will be modified with selected poly-lactides offering a variety of degradation features, making them ideal candidates for hosting and releasing pharmaceutical agents. The bio-coating will be analyzed by means of physical, chemical and pharmaceutical means. Finally, safety and efficacy of the bioactive coating will be demonstrated in a preclinical investigation.
