Atmospheric Cold Plasma Deposition of Nano TiO2 and Hydroxyapatite for Dental Implants.
Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Allemand)
The application of coatings used in implants has developed into a multi billion dollar industry. The most important surfaces for orthopaedics relates to Hydroxyapatite (HA) and Titanium dioxide (TiO2) to promote bone growth and attachment. The development of HA surfaces has not found widespread application in the dental implants because of initial trails showed the loosing of the implant. Presently a number of the Dental companies have developed new processing methods such as Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD), RF sputtering and sol-gel / dip coatings, which have developed to products on the market. Also within this topic the uses of nano structure coatings have been used to increase the activity of cells at the surface. At present these coatings have significantly lower adhesion to the surface substrate and low crystallinity. The application of Nano Powders (NPs) by Thermal Spray Coatings (TSC) has been limited because of the transport, injection and vaporization of the NPs. Also the nano structure of the powders is lost during the processing procedures. One interesting processing method is Atmospheric Cold Plasma Deposition (A-CPD). The energy of the plasma used in A-CPD is relatively low and standard powders do not function. The use of NPs reduces the required thermal mass and developments by one project partner have solved problems relating to the transport and injection of powders. This project would study the A-CPD physics and the resulting coatings to determine how wide the window is to coat nano TiO2 and HA and what is the potential of such a system for Dental implants.
