This feasibility study aims to investigate automatic methods for measuring on board of sailing yachts the wind direction and possibly the wind strength at distances of up to 5 km ahead. Camera systems with adequate optics and optical filtering techniques and specific imaging and image processing techniques have to be developed for achieving these goals. Experiments at the shore of the lake of Geneva will be performed under different weather conditions with cameras at visible and infrared wavelength ranges. The evaluation of the results will allow verifying the validity of the different concepts, determining optimized parameters and procedures for the development of on-board systems.
