Am 8. Dezember 2006 wurde im Zuge des Ausbaus eines geothermischen Reservoirs in etwa 5 km Tiefe unterhalb der Stadt Basel ein spürbares Erdbeben der Magnitude ML = 3.4 ausgelöst. Die Versicherung der Betreibergesellschaft hat in der Folge rund 7 Mio CHF Sachschäden kompensiert, die diesem Beben zugeschrieben wurden. Das Geothermieprojekt wurde vorübergehend gestoppt. In der vorliegenden, vom Kanton Basel-Stadt beauftragten und vom Bund unterstützten Studie wird das Erdbebenrisiko abgeschätzt, welches durch den weiteren Ausbau und den Betrieb des geothermischen Systems verursacht werden würde.

In the course of the development of an enhanced geothermal reservoir at a depth of about 5 km underneath the city of Basel, a felt earthquake of magnitude ML = 3.4 was triggered on December 8th, 2006. The operator's insurance paid out property damages of about 7 million CHF, which were attributed to the earthquake. The geothermal project has been suspended since. In the current study, commissioned by the Kanton Basel-Stadt and supported by the Swiss federal government, we assess the seismic risk resulting from continued development and subsequent operation of the geothermal system.

Au cours du développement d'un réservoir géothermique à une profondeur d'environ 5 km sous la ville de Bâle, un séisme perceptible de magnitude ML = 3.4 a été déclenché le 8 décembre 2006. L'assurance de l'exploitant a payé environ 7 millions de CHF de dégâts matériels, attribués à ce séisme. Le projet géothermique a été suspendu depuis. La présente étude, commandée par le Canton de Bâle-ville et soutenue par la Confédération suisse, a pour but l'estimation du risque résultant de la poursuite du développement et de l'exploitation du système géothermique.
