The South African History Project (SAHP)
Description succincte
(Anglais)

This project proposal aims at funding the publication and distribution of a new series of history teaching resources for South African schools. It responds to a strongly felt need for a multi-perspective approach to understanding history, taking into account the socio-cultural diversity of the country.

The South African History Project (SAHP) of the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) is producing a series of booklets on South African historiography undertaken by a panel of distinguished historians and writers. The SAHP seeks to produce 10 000 historiography booklets for Further Education Training (FET, grades 10-12) learners of history on key themes in South African history.

The project is conceptualised within the context of the Ministerial History and Archaeology Report (2000), which seeks to encourage the nurturing of critical thinking skills, historical knowledge and interpretation. The project is further located within the Presidential African Renaissance Project. It is a unique, national, project designed to reinstate history to its rightful place in the national curriculum.

The project is in line with SDC’s objectives in South Africa, in particular with the objectives of the Education programme, as described in the annual programme 2003. It will create additional synergies in our partnerships with the Ministry of Education. It has the strong support of the Minister of Education who will officially launch the publication at a national event within the framework of the new South Africa’s 10year anniversary celebration. It will highlight SDC’s support to the transition from Apartheid to democracy
