In collaboration with Fischer Engineering Solutions AG, EPFL has demonstrated the feasibility of a new high-speed direct driven oil-free turbocompressor for refrigerant systems including heat pumps. Oil-free compressor technology is a major technology step towards significant improvements of heat pump efficiency and size. The objectives are now twofold: a) to further develop and test the single stage compressor unit with higher performance in a real heat pump prototype. (b) to develop a two-stage unit which has a very promising market with the substitution of oil or gas fired boilers
