Abstract
(English)
The proposed research project deals with the problem of lightning strikes to tall structures and associated electromagnetic radiation. The interaction of lightning with tall strike-objects has recently attracted considerable attention of lightning researchers. It is a novel area of studies, and the resolution of associated questions will have an impact upon many lightning-related applications such as lightning protection and the determination of lightning parameters from remote field measurements. The research performed by the applicants and by other research groups in the last 3 years has raised some important questions. The main objective of the present proposal is to carry out further theoretical investigations and experimental measurements to understand and elucidate the raised issues, namely related to the signature of electromagnetic field radiated by lightning to tall structures. The results obtained in this project will allow the development of new models capable of predicting in an accurate way electromagnetic radiation from lightning strikes to tall structures. The theoretical analysis carried out in the project will be complemented with experimental results associated with lightning strikes to tall structures. The experiments foreseen in the project will be carried out using the Austrian Gaisberg Tower (100 m high), in collaboration with our partners from ALDIS (Austrian Lightning Detection and Information System, Austria), Vienna University of Technology (Austria) and the University of Uppsala (Sweden). The theoretical investigations will be tested versus multi-station measurements of electromagnetic fields radiated by lightning to the Gaisberg Tower (Austria), simultaneously with measurements of lightning return stroke current. The research will be performed by the EMC Group of EPFL (Dr. Farhad Rachidi, Vice Chair of the COST Action P18) with the cooperation of the partners of the COST P18 Action, in particular with ALDIS (Dr. G. Diendorfer, Leader of WG1), the University of Uppsala (Prof. R. Thottappillil, Chair of the COST Action P18), and the University of Toronto (Prof. W. Janischewskyj). In Switzerland, we will closely collaborate with the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (Prof. M. Rubinstein) and Armasuisse (Dr. A. Jaquier and M. Nyffeler).
