Kurzbeschreibung
(Deutsch)
|

Abstract
(Englisch)
|
This project was part of the pan-European action COST A27 LANDMARKS. Its main objective was to develop a landscape typology of Switzerland. The project was implemented against the background of the cultural landscape research in Europe and based on existing research work and concepts in Switzerland. Due to the natural conditions and the diversity of land use and settlement structures, the Swiss cultural landscapes were and still are particularly suitable to analyze the processes of change and the loss of not renewable cultural resources. For this purpose integral cultural landscape types, which could be expected in Switzerland, were determined. Core areas were defined for the main five types and their specific characteristics were identified. This area-wide overview of the landscape types could be seen as a basis for the spatial demarcation of today's distinctive pre-industrial landscapes in Switzerland. The period of investigation was 1850 up to present. For the individual landscape types a dimension between 15 and 80 km2 has been identified; the traditional agrarian landscape type covering an area of 80 km2 at least. The research focussed on the traditional agrarian landscape type using both quantitative and qualitative methods. For the analysis several indicators were used, such as forest areas, road network, topography, settlements, and agricultural areas. The following methods were applied: The spatial demarcation of the landscape types was carried out by using satellite-photographs, maps, and statistical data. In the case study areas Freiberge (Jura) and napf (Midland) diachronic analyses (forest areas and settlement development) as well as questionnaire surveys and interviews with the population and regional experts were undertaken.
