New strategies to combat thermal and photonic degradation in bitumen-based sealant materials
Abstract
(English)
Bituminous sheeting is widely used in the construction industry as a sealant for flat roofs, walls and foundations. However, its range of application is currently limited by the need to provide mechanical protection against UV radiation in the form of an inorganic top layer, which also significantly increases the weight per unit area. The aim of the present project is to explore alternative, environmentally sound ways of improving the aging resistance of the bitumens and polymer modified bitumens currently used in these applications in order to: (a) open up new areas of application; (b) reduce transport costs and emissions; (c) facilitate recycling after service.
