Hearing instrument algorithms for improved spatial perception
Abstract
(English)
This proposal addresses the need to quantify, predict and improve spatial perception and speech intelligibility in complex acoustic scenes with bilateral hearing instruments. Research activities include the development of· an objective measure to quantify and predict the subjective spatial quality of bilateral hearing instruments, focusing on spatial attributes such as externalization, localization, and distance and movement perception;· bilateral strategies based on deterministic and statistical signal processing to improve speech intelligibility and to provide a faithful spatial reproduction of auditory scenes to the hearing aid user. The design of the objective measure and the bilateral strategies will be inspired by the mechanisms of binaural signal processing and spatial feature extraction of the human auditory system. The outcome of the project will be software prototypes and a real-time implementation of the hearing instrument algorithms, as well as a software implementation of the objective spatial quality measure.
