Specially designed to show detailed information on a small scale, the miniAtlas of Human Security is a succinct introduction to today's most pressing security challenges.

Challenging the expert consensus that the threat of global terrorism is increasing, the Human Security Brief 2007 reveals a sharp net decline in the incidence of terrorist violence around the world. Fatalities from terrorism have declined by some 40 percent, while the loose-knit terror network associated with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda has suffered a dramatic collapse in popular support throughout the Muslim world.

The Brief also describes and analyses the extraordinary, but largely unnoticed, positive change in sub-Saharan Africa's security landscape. The number of conflicts being waged in the region more than halved between 1999 and 2006; the combat toll dropped by 98 percent. Finally, the Brief updates the findings of the 2005 Human Security Report, and demonstrates that the decline in the total number of armed conflicts and combat deaths around the world has continued. The number of military coups has also continued decline, as have the number of campaigns of deadly violence waged against civilians. The Brief is available online at www.humansecuritybrief.info

Projektziele (Englisch)

The Human Security Report Project aims at improving the global discussion on human security issues through the collection and publication of the best available statistics. Through a three year support, Switzerland remains a relevant partner of the project and co-decides when it comes to the focus of thematic focuses. Launching events in Switzerland shall enhance the visibility of the project and fuel the debate on the relevance of human security issues in Switzerland.

About the Project

In May 2007, the Human Security Report Project (HSRP) joined the new School for International Studies at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. The HSRP was previously based at the Human Security Centre at the Liu Institute for Global Issues, University of British Columbia.

The HSRP's mission is to conduct research on global and regional trends in political violence, their causes and consequences and to make this research accessible to the policy and research communities, the media, educators and the interested public.

The HSRP's flagship publication, the Human Security Report, is complemented by the Human Security Brief series, the Human Security Gateway (an online database of human security resources), the Afghanistan Conflict Monitor (a website highlighting new research and analysis on the conflict in Afghanistan), and three online bulletins, Human Security News, Afghanistan Security News and Human Security Research.

The HSRP, which is funded by five governments, runs policy workshops, undertakes independent research, and also commissions research from individual scholars and research institutions around world.
