CerWoodCut Netshape manufacturing of ceramic matrix based cutting tools for industrial wood machining
Abstract
(Englisch)
In the previous successful CTI feasibility study ¿WoodTool¿ a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material was developed and application tested for industrial wood machining. However the laboratory based processing costs were too high for commercialization. In this project a cost effective net shape manufacturing route will be developed to produce CMC based cutting tools with the help of a new experienced industrial project partner CERATIZIT (CERATIZIT are specialists in tool machining and within its group have considerable experience in ceramic production). The new processes in this project require new materials development. In addition testing by OERTLI and Empa has shown introduction of a micron dimension ¿face¿ on the cutting tip edge could lead to significant improvements in the cutting and wear performance of the new tools. This new cutting tip feature which is not used in industry yet, will be incorporated in the design and manufacture of the CMC wood cutting tools.
