Photodetectors for Next Generation Broadband Access Passive Optical Networks (PONDETECT)
Abstract
(English)
This project aims to develop advanced avalanche photodiodes (APD) for next generation 10 gigabit (10G) fiber-optic broad band access networks. These access networks are based on point-to-multipoint passive optical networks (PON) over single-mode fiber. Due to link power budget constraints, 10G PON-APD will be key elements of next generation 10G PON. Only 10G PON-APD will offer link spans for cost-efficient connection of remote subscribers or increased number of subscribers per central office terminal in metropolitan areas. For operators, this will result in a significant cost benefit both in OPEX and CAPEX for future Fiber to the Home (FTTH) networks.
