ELECTRE (ELEctrical and laser Computer TRacking Element) - Optical laser mouse Module using speckles and interferences for enhanced tracking performances
Abstract
(Englisch)
A new generation of laser-based optical tracking modules will be developed, offering superior performances in terms of tracking accuracy and robustness, low-power consumption (single-battery operation) and fabrication costs, ensuring a strong Swiss market position in this key business for EM Microelectronic-Marin SA. Scientific and technical innovations are mandatory at all system levels: tracking accuracy will be addressed by developing new optical principles for motion detection (based on speckles and interferences), new optical geometry, and enhanced signal-processing algorithms. Power consumption will be reduced by an appropriate photon management and by optimal IC implementation of the signal processing. System-level fabrication costs will be addressed by using a cost effective VCSEL and compact optical arrangement allowing small packages. These key concepts will be used in a first phase to develop a new family of optical mice, and integrated in a second phase into innovative pointing devices for the market of portable computing.
