Multifunctional Nanocomposite Coatings for high performance cutting tools (MUNACO)
Abstract
(English)
The objective of this project is to develop multifunctional nanocomposite coatings with thermal barrier and low friction capabilities for carbide tools applied in High Performance Cutting. It aims at fundamental study of synthesis, structure featuring, and nanomechanical properties of monoblock and sequentially assembled nanocomposite materials from vapour phase. The strengthening mechanisms and interface driven phenomena determining the mechanical and thermo-physical properties will be considered both experimentally and theoretically. Atomistic theories and ab-initio density functional calculations will be used to extend insight into nanoscale phenomena involved in nucleation and growth of nanostructured materials. The fundamental knowledge of structure-property relations is expected to offer a much wider variety of strategies for development and optimisation of new products.
