Legal basis for the evaluation (English)

Das SBF verfolgt die Praxis einer externen Evaluation der Schweizer Beteiligung in internationalen Forschungsorganisationen auf einer 10-jahres Basis; die ESRF-Beteiligung wurde 2006 zum ersten Mal evaluiert

Executive summary/ Recommendation (English)

Switzerland makes very good use of its 4% participation in the ESRF and publishes many papers in much respected scientific journals. There are many Swiss groups from different disciplines using almost all beamlines at the ESRF. The success rate of the Swiss applications for beamtime is far better than average.

Main recommendations:
1. Switzerland should continue its membership of the ESRF at the same level as in the review period and therefore should actively support the prolongation of the actual ESRF-Convention as of 2008 onwards.
2. Switzerland should continue its important and productive collaboration with Norway in the very successful Swiss Norwegian Beamline SNBL.
3. Switzerland should continue its active input in the organisational structure of the ESRF.
4. It should become more attractive for Swiss young scientists to join the scientific staff at the ESRF by introducing a scheme for returning in a (temporarily) job in Switzerland itself when the ESRF job is ending.
