GLOBALDIV is European project taking place in the Biodiversity Action Plan for Agriculture (European Commission) that aims at disseminating current advanced and integrated methodologies for the characterization, evaluation prioritization and conservation of livestock genetic resources. GLOBALDIV aims at exploiting all information (molecular, geoenvironmental, socio-economic) gained in past projects in EU and worldwide to define guidelines based on modern methods and technologies for the conservation and management of animal genetic resources. Swiss breed reports and genetic data (on cattle and goats), as well as geoenvironmental and socio-economic information characterizing Switzerland constitute a part of the integrated data base, and will therefore be analysed and compared to the same kind of information collected in other countries.

GLOBALDIV est un projet européen qui fait partie du plan d'action en faveur de la biodiversité dans le domaine de l'agriculture (Commission européenne). Ce projet a pour but de diffuser les méthodes et techniques courantes utilisées pour caractériser, évaluer et conserver les ressources génétiques des animaux d'élevage. L'expérience et les résultats de projets européens passés sont également valorisés dans le cadre de GLOBALDIV avec l'aide de nouveaux instruments de visualisation et d'aide à la décision dans le but d'obtenir une vue globale sur la diversité génétique dans le monde (4 continents sur 5 impliqués dans la recherche).

Goals of the project:
• integrate and disseminate experience gained in past large scale EU biodiversity projects on the main livestock species;
• review methods to organise and combine existing data and databases in order to obtain a global (worldwide) view of diversity of livestock species;
• promote the formation of interdisciplinary working groups (WGs) of experts reviewing key aspects of Farm Animal Genetic Resources (FAnGR) characterization, evaluation and conservation;
• review methods and software for integration of specialist knowledge from disciplines as different as husbandry, genetics, sociology, economics and geographic analysis;
• identify perspectives for future research opportunities and priorities for the characterization, evaluation and sustainable conservation of livestock species;
• train technical and scientific personnel involved at various level in FAnGR characterization and conservation through cycles of seminars;
• widely disseminate the results in form of guidelines to all relevant stakeholders in the Livestock Farming Sector.

Buts du projet:
• intégrer et disséminer l'expérience acquises lors de précédents projets sur la biodiversité au sein des principales espèces d'animaux d'élevage;
• faire l'état de l'art sur les méthodes existantes dans le but d'organiser et de combiner les bases de données actuelles dans le but d'obtenir une image générale de l'état des ressources génétiques animales dans le monde;
• promouvoir la formation de groupes de travail interdisciplinaires constitutés d'experts dans le but de passer en revue des aspects-clés de la caractérisation, de l'évaluationet de la conservation des FAnGR dans le monde;
• faire l'état de l'art sur les méthodes et les logiciels existants dans le but d'intégrer les connaissances de spécialistes dans des disciplines aussi différentes que l'élevage, la génétique, la sociologie, l'économie et l'information géographique et environnementale;
• identifier des perspectives de recherche future dans le domaine de la caractérisation, de l'évaluation et de la conservation durable des animaux d'élevage;
• former du personnel technique et scientifique impliqué dans la caractérisation, l'évaluation et la conservation durable des FAnGR grâce à des cycles de séminaires;
• largement distribuer les résultats sous la forme de recommandations distribuées aux éleveurs.

Month 6. Kick-off meeting in Piacenza in march 2007. A Prototype of interactive cartography was developped. Application case study and first GLOBALDIV paper on 43 goat breeds and 57 sheep breeds presented at the Geocomputation 2007 Conference in Maynooth, Irland.
The collecting of data on the Original Swiss Brown is in progress. Contacts were taken with Prof. Claude Gaillard and Dr. Gabriela Obexer-Ruff (Institute of Animal Genetics, University of Bern) and with MM. Lucas Casanova and Jürg Moll (Schweiz Braunviehzuchtverband).
