XG-102 is a powerful neuroprotectant in rodent models of cerebral ischemia, with a safe toxicological profile (CTI # 7057.02). Ischemic damage progresses with time, so early treatment is important. Our experiments are aimed at proving that XG-102 is not detrimental in hemorrhagic stroke and does not interfere with thrombolysis, the currently available acute treatment of ischemic stroke. XG-102 could then be given indiscriminately to all stroke patients before reaching the hospital, saving 1-2 h and increasing the chances to protect the brain efficiently. Furthermore, the most efficient therapies will probably require the need of different drugs able to block the different cell death programs of the cells. Therefore, we will develop a novel multi-target neuroprotective compound.
